Time For A Serious Question: Why Is Discernment Important?

1 Corinthians 11:27-29

[27] Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.
[28] But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.
[29] For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord’s body.
[30] For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.

When I began to study upon this, my heart was immediately stirred and quickened to establish this thought within me: How does a person know when they have ate and drank in an “unworthy” way?

First of all, I am sure that in many cases a lot of us have passed right by this passage with no thought to the mystery that is dwelling here. I had recalled this passage before in times past when I read it, but something was different this time  and was leading me to open my heart for something new. As I began to wonder the purpose, I realized the part that became more clear was “not discerning the Lord’s body”. In the lack of performing this simple act of discernment, we tend to ‘fall asleep’ and fall prey to the enemy, which leads me to say that many of us are asleep standing up (or even attempting to still serve God in some way and are weakly or ill!).

Secondly, as the cup of salvation dwells within you, you KNOW that you are saved and are renewed in that each day. This piece of the puzzle has a part of everyday life, but it is not what keeps me alone! Let’s remember the bread of life, the word of God, the very substance that will speak to us in the hardest of times! I know as a minister that it would be easy to get discouraged and deceive yourself into thinking that no one ever uses the word of God, but that simply is impossible! If there ever moments in your life when you are victorious, obeying God, working in charity, or overcoming the enemy…one thing is evident: the word of God is coming alive in you. Sure, knowing the promise of eternal life is vital to unlock the faith but how much more does the word of God come alive when used and discerned!

I can use myself as an example. When I accepted Christ as my Savior there was a bondage of addiction to drugs and alcohol (amongst the natural lack of having Christ). Salvation forgave me of my sins, and the word of God came alive and the power of the spirit of God delivered me from every bondage! I stand today a free man from so much of what I never thought I would walk away from. Life is so much simpler now to simply discern things and to make sure that I am partaking in the cup of salvation and eating of the bread of life! It is when I neglect to do so that I starve, grow weak and fall asleep (therefore in turn lay vulnerable to the enemy).

With all of this in mind, please take time in prayer to self-assess to see what you are partaking of each day. See if you are maximizing the full potential of what is dwelling from the freely given gift of Christ in your life.

Genesis 28: 14-22

[10] And Jacob went out from Beer-sheba, and went toward Haran.
[11] And he lighted upon a certain place, and tarried there all night, because the sun was set; and he took of the stones of that place, and put them for his pillows, and lay down in that place to sleep.
[12] And he dreamed, and behold a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven: and behold the angels of God ascending and descending on it.
[13] And, behold, the LORD stood above it, and said, I am the LORD God of Abraham thy father, and the God of Isaac: the land whereon thou liest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed;
[14] And thy seed shall be as the dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east, and to the north, and to the south: and in thee and in thy seed shall all the families of the earth be blessed.
[15] And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to thee of.
[16] And Jacob awaked out of his sleep, and he said, Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it not.
[17] And he was afraid, and said, How dreadful is this place! this is none other but the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.
[18] And Jacob rose up early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put for his pillows, and set it up for a pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it.
[19] And he called the name of that place Bethel: but the name of that city was called Luz at the first.
[20] And Jacob vowed a vow, saying, If God will be with me, and will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment to put on,
[21] So that I come again to my father’s house in peace; then shall the LORD be my God:
[22] And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God’s house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee.

We might feel like a pilgrim and a stranger, but as we read about the vision of the ladder in the vision that Jacob received it was a clear demonstration of the limitless borders and access that we have with God! The ladder that was in the vision demonstrated that we can always call out on God in our time of trouble; for when we need God, there is no place (north, south, east or west) that we could be that we could not call out (go up)!

I am also encouraged to know that Jacob recognized that He didn’t know that God was there, and then made a vow and dedicated that place to God. When we remind ourselves of whom God is and what He can do, we should dedicate our mind and resources to trusting Him with all of our might and power, for there is nothing that cannot conquer when we have God on our side!

Here are some other verses that are reminders of just how close God is to us and how easy it is for us to always stir this up within us:

Psalm 121:1-8

[1] I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help.
[2] My help cometh from the LORD, which made heaven and earth.
[3] He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: he that keepeth thee will not slumber.
[4] Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep.
[5] The LORD is thy keeper: the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand.
[6] The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.
[7] The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul.
[8] The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.

God is definitely as representative to a sleepless watchman, always ready and available regardless of the time or venue! Sometimes we easily forget this because we roam the earth often in our own trials, but be reminded today! Let’s get out of the way that we feel and begin to step into the presence of God. Let’s put off ourselves and put on more of God!

Deuteronomy 33:26-27

[26] There is none like unto the God of Jeshurun, who rideth upon the heaven in thy help, and in his excellency on the sky.
[27] The eternal God is thy refuge, and underneath are the everlasting arms: and he shall thrust out the enemy from before thee; and shall say, Destroy them.

If you are looking for the ultimate support system, look no further than Jesus Christ! When people are looking for others to do it, it will more often than not be a failure for the lack of availability. Fear not friends, for God is there when you begin to speak the first words from your heart that believes!

2 Timothy 4:17-18

[17] Notwithstanding the Lord stood with me, and strengthened me; that by me the preaching might be fully known, and that all the Gentiles might hear: and I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.
[18] And the Lord shall deliver me from every evil work, and will preserve me unto his heavenly kingdom: to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

If you ever feel alone, do not be deceived! God is SO there and ready to help you with each and every care and heartache you are dealing with. There is nothing too big for God!

Some other verses for note and encouragement:

Psalm 57:1

[1] Be merciful unto me, O God, be merciful unto me: for my soul trusteth in thee: yea, in the shadow of thy wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities be overpast.

We can take refuge in a time of trouble!

Isaiah 25:4

[4] For thou hast been a strength to the poor, a strength to the needy in his distress, a refuge from the storm, a shadow from the heat, when the blast of the terrible ones is as a storm against the wall.

We can take refuge in the middle of life’s storms!

Isaiah 51:16

[16] And I have put my words in thy mouth, and I have covered thee in the shadow of mine hand, that I may plant the heavens, and lay the foundations of the earth, and say unto Zion, Thou art my people.

We can take refuge in the shadow of his hand when we need to take cover and hide from the afflictions that try and destroy us!

Exodus 33:22

[22] And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by:

We can take refuge in the Rock of Ages, for it is a foundation that has lasted and always will!

Keep Your Eyes Wide Open

Revelation 3:2 – Be watchful, and strengthen the things which remain, that are ready to die: for I have not found thy works perfect before God.

1 Thessalonians 5:6 – Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.

– – – –

When I go to lay my head down at night, there is a moment that takes place right before I go to sleep: I begin to relax my mind and my body, shut my eyes, and finally let my body give in to the weariness of the day because it simply has to. Every person must enter into rest at some point for many reasons, with one of the main ones being to obtain strength for another day. In considering how this happens for the body, we have to realize that this wants to happen naturally for us in our trials as well: we get discouraged and tired with the way things are for so long and eventually just want to close our eyes and give up. Doing this lets the outcome go in a direction that perhaps that it wasn’t meant to.

What do I mean? If we are continually praying to God each day over the things that bother us, we will never grow tired in our spiritual person. In fact, we will begin to grow stronger and start to revive the parts of us that have already fallen asleep. The church needs a strong awakening in such a way that they do not even realize! It starts with us! Don’t fall asleep on God!

Put Into Practice:

I would ask that this next exercise be a controlled one, so have at least one or two persons are very close by if you are going to try this in an area that has a lot of objects around. Find yourself something that you can have as a blindfold and hold it up to your eyes with the lights on (do not tie it on yet!) to make sure that no light can get into your vision. After you have found something that works, think of something safe to do that you think you could do “in your sleep” or “with your hands tied behind your back”. For example purposes, I would use trying to make a sandwich or brushing your teeth.

To me, it is amazing how it is so easy to get off track without having the simple leisure of light illuminating the way for you. People take it for granted each and every day! Now, simply remember this concept as you go about your life and remember how easy we can get off track without allowing the light (witness and spirit of God) to shine and lead us through all of the things we need help with, no matter how silly they are.
