Study To Show Yourself Approved….Did We Get It Wrong?

When I think about studying to show myself approved, I remember hearing the same message through the halls and sanctuaries of many churches. I remember looking back on bible schools that were always set on trying to play games on memorizing the most bible verses. I also remember hearing as I grew up that there would be moments where you would need to be ready to share the text of the word of God. I’m sure that you may have some memories as well that bring you to the remembrance of that phrase, right?

The question I have for everyone today is, did we or have we got it wrong? Before you may jump to a quick conclusion of NO, please consider the reasoning that I share with you today and know that this is something that I not only learned in ideal but in experience as well.

To me, studying to show thyself approved goes so much further than knowing the bible word for word. In fact, attempting to do this would prove to be difficult as there are more versions to learn and memorize than what we even have time for to study! It goes further than learning Gods word to attempt to witness to someone by your head knowledge of the bible. When you think approved, think about the phrase “being pleasing to God”. Think about how that people at all times are watching your life, whether they believe in God or not. The bottom line is this, being approved in Gods word is directly correlated in how you live according to the word that lives in you that you actually use. In other words, we come out from being a hearer and wanting people to be drawn by listening to the true meaning of the word by doing it and letting it be a witness towards others!

Let people see the word that lives in you by your love and faith in how you live! Then in the end you succeed and win others to Christ!

So Tell Me About Your Day

Have you ever had that moment where you get to talk to your spouse or loved one and you asked them “So how was your day?”. As small as this question seems, it goes without saying that for most of us this may be one of the only moments where you show your concern for their well-being and what they do. Some of us may be saying, “but I do care about them!”, and no doubt that we all do. There is one thought I want to remind you about using this example.

God is concerned about your day. I am so thankful for that. When all else lose concern for how you are or if you need help God is ready to talk. In fact God is ready at any time for you to cast your cares before Him! I know that you may not be cool with sitting at your kitchen table chatting it up with God but there is definitely a means for you to do it: prayer! Prayer is not only for the devotion and worship time we give to God but is purposed as a means to cast our hindrances aside through faith.

Show concern because you want to. For one example, teenagers often do not want to communicate everything openly, but I encourage you to try anyway. When teens get in the years of rebelling or attempting to define their self it appears that they could care less about what you think. The one thing that should not change, regardless of how much a person does, is your love and concern for them.

As God reflects concern for you daily, remember to show it in kind for all. The world needs that love to be drawn to almighty God.

Is The First Step Is Always The Hardest One? I Feel A Poll Coming On…

One of the most used phrases that I have ever heard in church or for even life in general is that “that first step is always the hardest”. I remember one of the first times that I ever prayed out loud in front of anyone when I was a child. At the time it seemed like the hardest thing in the world to do. What helped me to carry through was the help of hearing the voices of others around me praying. It was truly a great moment to remember. It is always a great thing to remember to be a voice for someone else to follow along to, no matter what medium it is for the Lord!

I also remember one of the first times that I ever stepped out and played and sang a song alone. The first few seconds before I began felt like a million years, yet as I began there was a gentle calm that came over me that helped me through. I attribute the ‘calm’ to the presence of the spirit coming to help me make a difference through the offering of obedience. If there is something that I remember each time I obey God, it is that the spirit of God is always going to meet you in your immediate act! You will not be alone!

One of the toughest first steps I have ever taken was when God was moving me into a new church. It was a brand new environment with new people and very little that I had ever known before. I was afraid at first because I did not want to leave the place I had been my whole life. However God was preparing me for my next work! And as I stepped out more and more and continued to follow the Lord in my calling I have been blessed to see many wonderful things there! The lesson that I learned here is that I would have missed on so much if I had not been listening to the burning call of God that was moving on me. Follow God when He leads you and be surprised at just how much of a blessing you are!

Do I think I have taken my last steps? No way! I think there are many more things and churches ahead! Do I think you have either? Absolutely not! Seek God for the understanding and be willing to follow for the directions for change in your life. Most importantly as I have heard all my days, do not be afraid to take that first step!

Being Hungry For God

Exodus 33:12-23

[12] And Moses said unto the LORD, See, thou sayest unto me, Bring up this people: and thou hast not let me know whom thou wilt send with me. Yet thou hast said, I know thee by name, and thou hast also found grace in my sight.
[13] Now therefore, I pray thee, if I have found grace in thy sight, shew me now thy way, that I may know thee, that I may find grace in thy sight: and consider that this nation is thy people.
[14] And he said, My presence shall go with thee, and I will give thee rest.
[15] And he said unto him, If thy presence go not with me, carry us not up hence.
[16] For wherein shall it be known here that I and thy people have found grace in thy sight? is it not in that thou goest with us? so shall we be separated, I and thy people, from all the people that are upon the face of the earth.
[17] And the LORD said unto Moses, I will do this thing also that thou hast spoken: for thou hast found grace in my sight, and I know thee by name.
[18] And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory.
[19] And he said, I will make all my goodness pass before thee, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will shew mercy on whom I will shew mercy.
[20] And he said, Thou canst not see my face: for there shall no man see me, and live.
[21] And the LORD said, Behold, there is a place by me, and thou shalt stand upon a rock:
[22] And it shall come to pass, while my glory passeth by, that I will put thee in a clift of the rock, and will cover thee with my hand while I pass by:
[23] And I will take away mine hand, and thou shalt see my back parts: but my face shall not be seen.

As Moses had found grace in the sight of God, his words resounded with a hunger for more of God. This is something that I am personally longing for now more than ever, and am encouraging you to have it in your heart as well. Strive to have a hunger for the presence of God. Do not let God be just another thing or even close to comparison to anything else; for when we let our walk with God get in this state, truly it is hard to endure life without His strength. You see, Moses became and was hungry for God’s glory. Some have come to church just to come to know a feeling or to fill the void of the age old curiosity to know of a spiritual presence to exist. As we strive, let us ask God to be glorified in each and every part of our lives when it is possible. If you can get a word in edgewise to glorify God about a success, then I say it’s Gods! If can have a spiritual moment no matter where it is and draw others to Christ, I say lead on! Let people see and know what God is all about!

As you continue to read on, Moses was seeking a brand new vision. He wanted to be led only by God and none other. In fact, he did not want to go anywhere lest God was his guide. What an attitude to have for a spiritual leader and how that will greatly affect their vision in such a wonderful way! God will be with you! Even though sometimes the plan is so great that we cannot comprehend the fullness thereof, just remember that the cleft of the rock is such a safe place to be.

The Kind Of Love It Takes

Ruth 1:3-4

[3] And Elimelech Naomi’s husband died; and she was left, and her two sons.
[4] And they took them wives of the women of Moab; the name of the one was Orpah, and the name of the other Ruth: and they dwelled there about ten years.

Ruth means “mercy”.

In chapter 1 we read about Naomi and her husband and two sons, who went to Moab where there sons were married at. Naomi’s husband dies, and her sons marry Orpah and Ruth. After the passing of the two sons, Naomi encouraged her daughters-in-law to stay behind, but Ruth stayed with her.

Ruth 1:9-15

[9] The LORD grant you that ye may find rest, each of you in the house of her husband. Then she kissed them; and they lifted up their voice, and wept.
[10] And they said unto her, Surely we will return with thee unto thy people.
[11] And Naomi said, Turn again, my daughters: why will ye go with me? are there yet any more sons in my womb, that they may be your husbands?
[12] Turn again, my daughters, go your way; for I am too old to have an husband. If I should say, I have hope, if I should have an husband also to night, and should also bear sons;
[13] Would ye tarry for them till they were grown? would ye stay for them from having husbands? nay, my daughters; for it grieveth me much for your sakes that the hand of the LORD is gone out against me.
[14] And they lifted up their voice, and wept again: and Orpah kissed her mother in law; but Ruth clave unto her.
[15] And she said, Behold, thy sister in law is gone back unto her people, and unto her gods: return thou after thy sister in law.

What a demonstrated act of kindness! When I see this love and longing to stay, it often makes me wonder if we could head off trouble more than we do by simply getting in there with our loved ones and doing all that we can in love. Sometimes we give up right when people are looking for us the most to do something. If we can learn to not always base our actions on the signs and actions of others, God will be with us when we follow His leadership!

Ruth 2:9-15

[9] Let thine eyes be on the field that they do reap, and go thou after them: have I not charged the young men that they shall not touch thee? and when thou art athirst, go unto the vessels, and drink of that which the young men have drawn.
[10] Then she fell on her face, and bowed herself to the ground, and said unto him, Why have I found grace in thine eyes, that thou shouldest take knowledge of me, seeing I am a stranger?
[11] And Boaz answered and said unto her, It hath fully been shewed me, all that thou hast done unto thy mother in law since the death of thine husband: and how thou hast left thy father and thy mother, and the land of thy nativity, and art come unto a people which thou knewest not heretofore.
[12] The LORD recompense thy work, and a full reward be given thee of the LORD God of Israel, under whose wings thou art come to trust.
[13] Then she said, Let me find favour in thy sight, my lord; for that thou hast comforted me, and for that thou hast spoken friendly unto thine handmaid, though I be not like unto one of thine handmaidens.
[14] And Boaz said unto her, At mealtime come thou hither, and eat of the bread, and dip thy morsel in the vinegar. And she sat beside the reapers: and he reached her parched corn, and she did eat, and was sufficed, and left.
[15] And when she was risen up to glean, Boaz commanded his young men, saying, Let her glean even among the sheaves, and reproach her not:

When we read on in chapter 2, you begin to see the concern that Boaz has for Ruth. When you read on into this, you begin to see the question that Ruth asks “How could I find this grace before you?” More often than not I have asked even myself this question too. It should make us be so thankful for the grace and mercy that we walk in each day in the sight of God!

Ruth 3:2-5

[2] And now is not Boaz of our kindred, with whose maidens thou wast? Behold, he winnoweth barley to night in the threshingfloor.
[3] Wash thyself therefore, and anoint thee, and put thy raiment upon thee, and get thee down to the floor: but make not thyself known unto the man, until he shall have done eating and drinking.
[4] And it shall be, when he lieth down, that thou shalt mark the place where he shall lie, and thou shalt go in, and uncover his feet, and lay thee down; and he will tell thee what thou shalt do.
[5] And she said unto her, All that thou sayest unto me I will do.

In chapter 3 we read how Naomi encourages her to go to the threshing floor and hide until Boaz falls asleep. She wanted her to find an opportunity to be able to talk with Boaz.

Ruth 3:9-13

[9] And he said, Who art thou? And she answered, I am Ruth thine handmaid: spread therefore thy skirt over thine handmaid; for thou art a near kinsman.
[10] And he said, Blessed be thou of the LORD, my daughter: for thou hast shewed more kindness in the latter end than at the beginning, inasmuch as thou followedst not young men, whether poor or rich.
[11] And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou requirest: for all the city of my people doth know that thou art a virtuous woman.
[12] And now it is true that I am thy near kinsman: howbeit there is a kinsman nearer than I.
[13] Tarry this night, and it shall be in the morning, that if he will perform unto thee the part of a kinsman, well; let him do the kinsman’s part: but if he will not do the part of a kinsman to thee, then will I do the part of a kinsman to thee, as the LORD liveth: lie down until the morning.

Upon him waking up, she expresses her desire to be married according to the kinsman-redeemer. Boaz had to break it to her that there was someone else that had a claim before he, but not to fret that essentially “he would take care of it”.

Ruth 4:9-10

[9] And Boaz said unto the elders, and unto all the people, Ye are witnesses this day, that I have bought all that was Elimelech’s, and all that was Chilion’s and Mahlon’s, of the hand of Naomi.
[10] Moreover Ruth the Moabitess, the wife of Mahlon, have I purchased to be my wife, to raise up the name of the dead upon his inheritance, that the name of the dead be not cut off from among his brethren, and from the gate of his place: ye are witnesses this day.

As we read on, we find that the other man renounces his claim at the gate, and Boaz pays the price for Ruth!

You can see through Boaz the redemption power of Jesus Christ, representing the full payment of salvation. Through Ruth not being able to do anything about her estate, it’s as much as where we are with our lives and sin, helpless!

1 Corinthians 6:20

[20] For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God’s.

When we think about the redemption for our sins, the sacrifice that Jesus Christ made paid the price in full for each and every one of us!

Ruth 4:14-17

[14] And the women said unto Naomi, Blessed be the LORD, which hath not left thee this day without a kinsman, that his name may be famous in Israel.
[15] And he shall be unto thee a restorer of thy life, and a nourisher of thine old age: for thy daughter in law, which loveth thee, which is better to thee than seven sons, hath born him.
[16] And Naomi took the child, and laid it in her bosom, and became nurse unto it.
[17] And the women her neighbours gave it a name, saying, There is a son born to Naomi; and they called his name Obed: he is the father of Jesse, the father of David.

They had a son, which was Obed, who was the father of Jesse, who was the father of David. Reading about this inspires me that when we do things for God that they all for a divine purpose. We simply have to learn to love and do what is right and follow the will of God for our success, even in a time when we are facing persecution! This all occurred during the time of the Judges, which was representative to disobedience, idolatry and violence.

Singing and Speaking At Heaven’s View Worship Center

First of all, I want to thank each and every one that came out to help support us at Heaven’s view. It was a true blessing to us (and to me personally). I have to give a shout out to Jamie and J.R. (they attend our home church and we work in the praise band together) for coming and blessing us in song! They did such a wonderful job and it is exciting to see what God is doing in their lives!

Rebekah wasn’t able to be there, but her girls came up and sang and picked up the slack in her honor. They are so sweet and such a blessing. It does make me feel old though to already see them singing and growing up so fast! Mona, Kay and Regina sang for us (and didn’t sing enough) but did a great job too! We’re gonna keep getting onto them until they start doing at least 2-3 songs!

With that said, I was amazed with how God adjusted the direction of the message that we preached. I’m sorry to say that we were not able to catch any audio, but I will be sure to post the notes in the Small Thoughts category and put as much as I can remember! As someone said after the service, it felt like such a strong power was there at first but then a sweet presence was there for anyone that was in need of coming up for prayer. Those are my favorite kind of church services: seeing a group of people willing to get in when God bids to tear down the strongholds of our flesh so that God can work through us to reach those who need a move in a great way!

We hope to be back soon, and we will work on figuring out a way to capture audio for now on! We have been getting so much lately that it’s been hard to get all of it posted the past couple weeks! We hope to have something new on by Sunday! If you would like to be notified, be sure to get on our sermons list by clicking the Email Subscription link in the top right hand corner!
