Asimov’s Guide To The Bible (Reference)

This is an older book that I borrowed this book from a family member. I went for quite a while before I started wanting to be able to have a greater understanding of the “wheres” and “whens” and how significant they are. And when you begin to read into it, it really does have a powerful effect on what you study in the bible. Let me tell you, this was not one of the easiest reads that I have ever went through (and I’m still not finished), but it definitely has it’s benefits. When you want to know about more details to do with historical and geographical facts to do with how the bible ties into it, this is a great tool to have on your bookshelf. It has made going through the old testament an easier experience and helps save time on having to dig facts on geography and history that would have been once too difficult to do on one’s own. It is definitely put together, and highly recommended for you reference buffs out there!

Nave’s Topical Bible (Reference)

This book came from my sister a few years ago, and only now have I found is one of my most enjoyed overall! I know when it comes to reference books about the bible that most of us might want to go to sleep….zzzz…you probably fell asleep at the thought, right? Let me try and excite you though!

In practically using it, it has just about any reference or word that you could possibly think of that is tied in the bible, with at least 1-2 good references to it as well as some defined meanings behind others. It has helped me countless times when I am trying to get my head around finding the place or general location of a scripture that even some search engines and apps cannot do!

This book has an A-Z layout, over 1,600 pages total, over 20,000 topics to read from, and over 100,000 scripture references to go by. There are cross-references all over the place so you don’t end up getting lost in it!

The Remnant: Restoring the Call to Personal Integrity

This book was given to me by one of the local ministers in our town and was most appreciated!

When I began to start reading this, it at first felt like my toes were getting stepped on a lot, but as you go on it brings out the deeper meaning and bigger vision of why we have to start at the personal level.

Here’s what helped me (This is what it meant to me, and not a paraphrase of the book!): it really begins at home. There are many things that you could accomplish out there to work hard for your ministry, but where is the joy in your life to do it without it all being centered with God in the home (or as it reads a Godly environment)?

I can definitely see why he was passing it out to people to read, and I definitely recommend it to anyone, and especially anyone that is called to work in ministry!

Zondervan Atlas of the Bible

Welcome to another review! I would like to start off by saying that I have a very heavy interest in attempting to understand the geological significance and relationship that it has with the word of God. I loved this book when I first got it because of some of the detailed illustrations that it has. I loved it even more when I began to read into detail about some of the bible history that is directly related with the way the land was laid out by possession.

To put it simply: if you want a step in the door on geography and terrain as it relates to the bible history and genealogy, this is for you!

Daily Readings From Becoming A Better You

Although this was only a 90 day devotional from a larger book, it was still definitely worth the read! I’ve listened to the audiobook of this book as well and it is very encouraging to hear the personal touches that are added throughout the entire book. It’s one thing to just hear encouraging words, but it’s another thing to know that it’s a real person reaching out to you in encouragement!

The book is laid out very well with scripture readings at the beginning, with 5-6 paragraphs tied to a central point (and subpoints along the way). All end with a “today’s prayer” and “today’s thought to becoming a better you”. Regardless of the form of media that you use of a ministry tool, one thing has to be the most important: how you use it is how effective it is in your life. In reading these everyday, it was very useful and effective and helped me each day. On a more personal note, I would read these in the morning and it would help me to frame my mind around something other than what I was dreading ahead of me later in the day! Make any tool that you use that God has provided for you useful by using it to help you ward off every problem in your life!

Dear Graduate – Letters Of Wisdom

I read this upon graduating college. It was given to me by my Aunt Kay. She has always been great about hooking me up with books and encouraging me to stay grounded in the Lord, and this was by far one of my favorites gifted to me!

This book is as it says in the title: literally a collection of great letters from Charles Swindoll. It’s not really a devotional style book because each chapter is essentially a letter. Every letter covers different topics, with each of them tied to God in a great way. A few of them include: ethics, determination, individuality, accountability, distinction, temptation, leadership, etc.

The letters all are in focus to a person that is about to launch out on life and provide sound Godly advice to areas that might have never been addressed before, and I recommend you include it in their gift pack if you ever are looking for something to add to their stuff to send them with to college or before their first job after college!

My Utmost For His Highest

When I began reading this book, I started thinking “this isn’t your average devotional book”. It is not. It was far more than that. The updated edition of Oswald Chambers work is truly a book about molding a person to become a better servant of God. I have gained great incite and understanding by being able to read from something that was written and then go out and search it more. It has a basic layout for a given day of bible verses and 3-4 strong paragraphs that get right to the point. It makes you grasp a hold of concepts like discipleship, being a true servant, sanctification, missionary work, etc. This was something that opened my eyes to some new things (as good books should do).  It’s a 365 day devotional, and is definitely one of my most recommended books for everyone.

A Shepherd Looks at Psalm 23

A relative of mine passed this book on to me, and so I thought I would give it a shot. As most of us have I’m sure, I thought to myself “there’s not too much more a person could learn about Psalm 23” After reading it though, I can definitely say I was wrong!

Phillip Keller gives a perspective of Psalm 23 from the perspective of a real life shepherd. When you begin to read it, he explains traits and characteristics of a shepherd into detail and shares many of his own life experiences that begins to make it powerful. It makes you really consider how the Lord is our shepherd and is always watching over us and performs things for our good; even though as a flock we might not necessarily agree with the ways it’s done or how because we only see as the sheep.

It’s a very quick read, and you can find editions (like the one I received) that was in large print which made it easy on the eyes as well. If you are a fan of hearing great testimonies and experiences and reading about how amazing God is, read it!

Open the Eyes of My Heart: Songs 4 Worship Devotional, Volume 1

When I finished this book, the only thing that I was thinking to myself was “I wish there was more!” This book contains 90 days worth of devotionals tied directly to older hymns or newer songs and has a very uplifting approach to merging worship and word together. Some of the songs I knew and some of them were new to me but I really enjoyed being able to simply read a lyric and letting its meaning encourage and uplift me.

There are even daily bible verses to read and what I would like to call “starter” prayers; those that should help you get those first few words out when we sometimes cannot find them to say.

In reading this book, I came to a powerful conclusion. A lot of times we completely separate praise and worship from the word of God; and to me they are different in the doing but not in the purpose. We have to learn and remember that they are both equally meaningful in practice and demonstration, so remember to use them to the best of your ability!

God Is In The Small Stuff – Graduate’s Edition

I’m really excited about finally getting a chance to share some thoughts on some of what I have finished lately and over the years. I feel like it’s the least we can do as a ministry to recommend good things that people can get to share for others!

I received this book a few years ago when I graduated school; unfortunately I should have read it right then! I admit that I did a few months later, and it was a very nice “prep” book when it comes to trying to get someone fresh out of school to get their frame of mind and life centered around God.

It’s a very quick read, and has some very meaningful tidbits and scriptures that get some good life values across in a very unique way. It’s not very in your face and intense, definitely opposite of reading through a bible reference! If you can manage to find a copy of this book or can suggest a download of it to your loved one, it would be great if they are graduating in the near future!
